Testing for Intelligence, that is the question?

Although many schools believe that a child's placement is based on how well or not so well they score on test. I believe that children should be tested to see how well they are progressing, but I do not solely believe this should determine where a child is placed. Some children are not test takers, and do not do well under pressure or during timed test.

Some children excel throughout the school year, but score low on state required test. This does not necessarily mean the child does not know the information, but it could mean the child is not good at taking test. I truly believe if we have to assess children we should do it based on how they learn and are graded academically throughout the school year. I know some may disagree but this is just my thoughts.

The school year is more relaxed and children for the most part can complete work at their  own pace, unlike state required test. I think this way would be best for all children. I think it would give them a better chance at being more successful. In Germany teachers and parents determines a child's placement not an examination.

I understand that we have to assess children to see how well they are learning what is being taught, to see where they need to improve or may need extra help. I do not think we should force children to sit in these rooms for hours doing test on information they may know, but end up failing because of the requirements and environment.

All children are not successful under pressure they all learn differently, so we should think of other ways to assess our children other than testing. We should never want to set our children up for failure but to always find a way to to push them to be successful.

  1. I was never a good test taker as a child, so I agree that it should not be the sole way to assess children. We should be able to assess them in other ways such as observation or portfolios. As you said, the environment of test taking is stressful, which reduces the opportunity to succeed.
